Is DAB the future of radio?
So the BBC want to turn off the FM transmitters sooner rather than later. Never mind the absurd waste of throwing tens of millions of perfectly good radios into landfill. Digital radios are still more expensive, consume more electricity, and produce worse sound quality.
But, if you do have to throw away your old radio soon, the answer may be an internet radio, not a DAB one. I have a DAB radio, and can pick up 5-10 stations on it. Over the internet, I can choose from many thousands of stations. I am sure that even car radio will be delivered by mobile internet access eventually. In fact, there is at least one car internet radio on the market.. I can't imagine the reception is anything but very poor if you leave a big town.
But for home use, if you already have a broadband connection, it's an easy choice. You can buy an internet radio for less than £50 from www.ebuyer.com as I write (as long as you like pink ones). The only thing you'd need to watch out for is that if you are on a low use tariff (eg 1GB of data a month), then internet radio will eat into that.
Make sure you get one that works with IP6 for future-proofing - maybe they all do; I don't know.
